Advantages of gray

Gray can be the color that combines shades and details into a whole, which at first glance appear to be contradictory. It should be borne in mind that gray can have different shades, and in combinations with other colors create a different mood. The neighborhood with beige, ocher, brown will bring warmth and comfort to the atmosphere, the combination of gray tones with blue and violet will make the room cool and calm.

  • Using gray as the main tone, you can easily and quickly change the style and mood of the room: it is enough to replace the color of textiles (curtains, bedspreads, throw pillows, blankets) to make the living room play with new colors. It does not require high costs and long-term repair.
  • The practicality of gray is indisputable, it does not get dirty so quickly, it practically does not fade.
  • Gray is an excellent basic background that helps to emphasize style, as well as relieves tension and fatigue.
  • The design of the living room in gray tones will contribute to a peaceful relaxation, to adjust in a friendly way.

Rules for using gray in the living room interior

Designers have seven rules for dealing with gray, allowing to use all its advantages to the full.

  1. Gray is used as the main or background tone, and the dimensions of the room do not matter. One condition must be observed: in small rooms with a small area, gray should be light, in large rooms darker shades are allowed. The larger the room, the darker the shade of gray can be used.
  2. If the interior is monochrome, light pastel shades are used, powdery shades - gray ones are diluted with beige, cream, peach and are lightened. When using dark gray, you should add to it other shades, brighter and more saturated.
  3. Making the interior of the living room in gray tones on a small area, it is combined with light tones - cappuccino, milky or creamy shades, taking into account the geometry of the room. The ceiling is made lighter, niches and protruding parts of the walls are darker than the basic tone of the finish. Thus, you can give a sense of volume and visually enlarge even a very small room.
  4. Large living rooms can be designed in monochrome, and the pearl-gray, and anthracite or graphite tones will look equally good. An indispensable condition: good multi-level lighting, otherwise the room can be gloomy.
  5. Gray can be used to correct room deficiencies. For coloring too large areas they use light and cold gray tones (steel, ice, silver, periwinkle), and too small or narrow ones are covered with saturated warm colors (ebony, gray-green).
  6. In the design of the gray living room should not use furniture of the same tone as the walls. So, if gray is the main, furniture should stand out against a neutral background. It can be the color of natural wood - either very light, or, conversely, almost black. Exceptions are made only for very small rooms, in which part of the furniture is appropriate to perform in the main tone of the walls to reduce their bulkiness. So do, for example, with large cabinets, racks.
  7. Bright decorative elements, selected in accordance with the chosen style, are obligatory: pictures in complex frames, floor vases and figurines for classics, bright plastic furniture, posters in “acidic” colors for modern styles, greenery of houseplants, nature photography for environmental trends.

Combinations of gray with other colors

White

This is a classic version that can be used in different styles, but is especially often used in Scandinavian interiors. It looks stylish and concise, allows you to add any colors and shades as an accent and create original interiors.

Depending on which side the windows face, you should use different shades of white in the interior of the living room in gray. If it is south, cold tones are more appropriate: blue ice, snow. For the “northern” living rooms it is better to choose warm colors: milk, cream, cream, ivory and the like. Additionally, you can add elements of black color - this will add sophistication. To avoid monotony and boredom, use different textures of surfaces.

Beige

This neighborhood gives the color of gray warmth, the room immediately becomes cozy, delicate. The size of the room depends on the ratio of colors: the smaller it is, the more beige, the larger - the more gray. At the same time, the saturation of color increases from smaller to larger.

Violet

The design of the living room in gray tones with the addition of purple, lilac, lavender shades will turn out to be refined and unusual. Purple is used, as a rule, as an accent, giving them a section of a wall or one of the walls, as well as textiles of similar shades.

The larger the room, the more elements of the purple tone should be in it in order for the living room to look harmonious. A general rule also applies to this combination: the smaller the room, the brighter the shades.

Brown

A very interesting combination that requires a special approach. Choose contrasting shades, while one of them should be lighter than the other. To this pair, they usually add a beige color to the third color, which shouldn’t argue with them by saturation.

Natural wood, which is usually brown in color, looks very good against a gray background, so it is preferable to use wooden furniture. Bordeaux looks good as an accent color with this pair - decorative elements and textiles of this color will help to create an expressive, memorable interior of the living room in gray tones.

Blue

Light blue shades in combination with gray - the best option for rooms facing the south side, especially in hot climates. Cool tones “cool” the atmosphere, blue reminds of the sky, creates a feeling of spaciousness, gives the room lightness and airiness.

You can combine gray with blue in various ways, for example, you can glue gray wallpaper with a pattern of blue colors on the walls, make one of the walls blue, and put blue stripes on the pearl-gray walls. The latter option will also help to slightly raise the visually low ceiling, if the strips are directed vertically, or to “expand” a short narrow wall, if directed horizontally.

Often in a gray living room design, combinations of turquoise with “asphalt” are used, for example, the soft gray sofa upholstery “wet asphalt” beautifully emphasizes decorative pillows of azure or turquoise hues and perfectly combines with the blue carpet.

Blue

Blue, especially saturated - a noble color that perfectly combines with gray. Depending on the saturation of gray pick a shade of blue. For example, light gray tones look good with “denim” shades of blue or ultramarine, dark gray beautifully emphasizes the royal shades of blue. Bright blue details are used as decorative accents on a gray-blue background.

Red

The interior of the living room in gray color looks good decorative elements of red tones, but they should not be much. The shades of red are selected depending on the saturation of the main tone, the lighter it is, the brighter can be the red color.

For example, light gray walls will serve as a good background for scarlet and ruby details, while on dark ones cherry and “wine” colors look great. This color combination is especially popular in minimalism, hi-tech, and loft interiors.

Green

Gray in combination with green helps to relax and rest, and therefore is often used in the decoration of bedrooms and living rooms. The design of the living room in gray tones with the addition of green is most often performed in eco-style. Particularly good in this case, houseplants, and even whole “green walls” of living plants.

Pink

The combination of gray and pink looks very gentle and elegant if light shades are used. For example, walls are pearl gray, textiles are light pink. To add warmth, choose warm pink shades such as peach.

When using more saturated gray tones, it is recommended to choose brighter pink ones, for example, fuchsia. Such a pair looks especially interesting if it is set off with bright turquoise. Option for the bold - use yellow as the third color. The result can be very interesting.

Yellow

The interior of the living room in gray tones with the addition of yellow color will be bright and at the same time cozy. It should be used in small quantities, as an accent or additional.

The general rule: the brighter the color, the smaller it is in the interior. Lemon yellow “acidic” shades can only act as accents, delicate light yellow tones can become complementary and cover large areas. As a third color, you can add green natural natural shades (foliage, grass), as well as red.
