How to calculate fabric consumption for curtains?

To measure correctly fabric consumption for curtains, you need to define two basic parameters: the length and width of future finished products.

Length calculation

Please note that the calculation of the length is done without taking into account the hem of the bottom and and the top of the curtains, this parameter will be added later. To calculate fabric for curtains, measure with the help of a metal tape measure the distance from the attachment of the curtain to the ledge to the desired length.

  • Length to the window sill. In this case, it is recommended to make the curtain a little higher than the level of the window sill, about 1 cm. Then they will move easily without touching it.

  • Average length The curtains look good, going down 10-15 centimeters below the window sill line. In addition, this option allows you to reduce fabric consumption for curtains.

  • Full length One of the most traditional and favorite design options for window openings is floor-length curtains. In this case, the distance should be measured not to the surface of the floor, but slightly higher. This will protect the fabric from fraying, the curtains can be washed less frequently, and they will last longer. Curtains falling on the floor, of course, look spectacular, but quickly become unusable, and prevent cleaning.

Width calculation

To calculate fabric for curtains, you need to consider how the fabric will be attached to the eaves, and how curvaceous the curtains will be. The last parameter takes into account the thickness and width of the folds on the curtain in a fully open state.

Board

Before you begin to make measurements, it is necessary to hang the eaves - this will be needed for the calculations of both the length and width of future curtains. Typically, the distance from the top edge of the window to the eaves is in the range from 7.5 to 12.5 centimeters, for the width of the window it should protrude at a distance of at least 15 cm in order to completely free the window opening from the curtains.

In order to bend beautifully when sewing curtains from the sides, you need to add 10 centimeters on each side.

How to calculate the fabric for curtains, designed, for example, for a standard window opening and a standard ceiling height?

In this case, the length of the eaves can be 2 m, the height of the curtains (up to the floor) is 2.6 m. To keep them not too lush, the assembly factor is 2.

Blind: Tulle

Fabric consumption for curtains Tulle made by the following formulas:

Height: curtain height + hem allowance + hem allowance from above
In our case, we have 2.6 + 0.15 + 0.10 = 2.85 (m)
Width: the length of the cornice x assembly factor, or in our case 2 x 2 = 4 (m).

Blind: curtains

Fabric consumption for blackout curtains is made according to the same formula, with the only difference that it, unlike tulle, is made of at least two parts. Therefore, the height will be the same, but the resulting width will have to be divided into two.

Board

Do not throw away the pieces of fabric left after cutting the curtains. From these remnants you can sew decorative pillows, curtain holders, other decorative elements.

Attention!

If the pattern on the curtains is repeated in length, then when sewing curtains, you will have to adjust the pattern at their joint. To do this, the fabric must be taken with a margin of the value of the repeat (a repeating pattern on the fabric). If the rapport is 60 cm long, the fabric should be taken 60 cm longer than it turns out.
