Old boards in interior design

The board is traditionally associated with wood products. In fact, the first samples were made of stone and baked clay. Such plates were not used in the design of houses, but played the role of information plates on which important data for descendants were stored. In everyday life, slate, magnetic, cutting, ironing and chalk boards are used. More than three centuries ago, the first circulating saw was invented. With its help, it was possible to expand the production of boards to an industrial scale. The unit replaced the impractical pit saws used in sawmills earlier. Boards in the interior have been used since ancient times, when a person learned to process wood. Moreover, they were used both as a rough finish and as a decor. Previously, the material was valued primarily because of its low cost and availability. Now priorities have changed and people are more attracted to environmental friendliness in wooden boards, since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find something natural on the market for high-quality imitations. As for accessibility, the use of rare, valuable breeds has come into vogue, so it is difficult to call them cheap. Although simple pine has managed to preserve its niche in the market, it is used only in the most unassuming interiors. About how to properly decorate the surface of the board in the house, and talk further.

Fashion or tradition?

Stylish design decisions are unquestionably dictated by fashion. This lady, as you know, is very capricious and in a couple of years she can build up a cult and overthrow materials, colors and entire directions. However, there are paradoxical things that do not obey fashion trends and remain "out of time." The habit of using them is so deeply rooted in the human mind that he is simply unable to abandon them. Boards can be described as "fashionable tradition." The material has become popular due to the relevance of a number of styles in which it is used, but it has never been forgotten. Wood, like brick, stone never left the interiors of houses and apartments due to the established tradition. More practical and human-friendly materials have not yet been invented. Imitations (even of high quality) are being actively created, but the original is always one step higher than skillful fakes. The board, as a geometric object, thanks to its universal form, is easily able to merge into any interior composition.

Of particular value for designers are aged boards, as it is now popular to use rarities and antiques.

Types of finishing boards

Boards are used in the decoration of walls, floor and ceiling. Depending on the processing technology and characteristics they are classified into the following types:

  • Lining. Used for exterior and interior decoration. Lining is a thin sheets that are connected to each other on the principle of "thorn-groove". The material can be made of wood, wood waste (MDF) or plastic. Depending on the profile, the wall paneling is divided into types: American, Standard, Calm, Euro.
  • Imitation timber. This species has only recently been considered as independent. Previously, he was assigned to the subgroups of lining. Imitation of a bar is made of carefully dried wood and has an impressive thickness. It is difficult for a philistine to distinguish this finishing material from the original, since it thoroughly repeats its texture.
  • Terrace boards. They are made from a composite of wood and polymers. The material used for the terraces. Due to its location, the board has strict requirements for strength and stability. The material must be treated with special compositions, and grooves are applied to its surface, which reduce the slipperiness and help to cope with additional loads in the form of temperature drops and changes in humidity.
  • Block house. It is a board with a semicircular face. Four logs of a block-house are cut from one log, and the core is allowed to be processed under a regular clapboard.
  • Planken or front board. The material is mainly used in the exterior. In many ways, the plank is similar to a decking. Fix fragments between themselves in two ways: butt and overlap. Regardless of the methodology between the modules, there is always a technological gap that provides air circulation.
  • Floorboard. Multi-layer material that is used for finishing the floor. It is made from several sheets of wood, which is covered with a protective film. The closest “relative” and competitor of the floorboard is laminate. It is less capricious, although it is manufactured according to a similar principle.

We should also mention the granary board. This type includes any wood materials that have already been used and reused. Old fragments of decoration help to create a light, casual interior in a rustic style, country, and ethnics. According to the sawn-off side, there are three groups of boards:

  • Uncut Boards are processed only from two wide sides, and two side ones are left in a natural form.
  • Edged. All four sides are propylene and have smooth, even surfaces.
  • Semi-cut. Only three sides are processed, and the fourth (short sidewall) retains its original appearance.
  • Slab. These boards are processed only one wide side. The croaker is often used in the manufacture of temporary fences.

Also, boards are sorted into groups depending on the type of wood from which they are made. Conventionally, the classification can be simplified to valuable and simple.

Application options

The board is a universal material. It is used to finish all surfaces inside and outside the house without restrictions. Modular wooden elements look original in the rooms and are in harmony with the modern loft, chalet, art deco and with a lighter Provence. A number of ethnic interiors, country and country, Scandinavian, eco style without this material can not do at all.

Wall decoration

The board is suitable for budget and luxury wall decoration. For surface cladding in luxury styles, it is recommended to choose a wide and thick lining. The field of coloring material will give the room coziness and make it more homely. It is possible to experiment with the laying of a conventional board: to attach it with a Christmas tree, diamonds, diagonally, or create whole mosaics of rich wood shades. Rough, poorly treated surfaces are ideal for suburban interiors, and smooth fit more strict styles. Coloring with the effect of ombre will create a unique color range due to gradient transitions of shades.

Ceiling finish

The ceiling is also sheathed with boards, although traditionally this surface is decorated with white plaster. In the spacious rooms you can keep the natural color of the wood. In confined spaces with low ceilings, it is better to resort to painting in light shades. Unique look combinations of surfaces of the board and plaster, separated by ceiling beams. These chalet style options are used. To decorate the surface of the ceiling, apply lining, edged board, narrow slats, a special set of modular elements similar to parquet, but decorated with a layer of veneer on the front side. Since the material in the interior dominates, it is advised to combine it with plaster and simple wallpaper without flashy drawings.

Flooring

For finishing the floor using laminate flooring and modern engineering board. These materials are elite and benefit in comparison with linoleum and carpet. Parquet is only suitable for hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and children. It is not recommended to lay in rooms with an aggressive microclimate: kitchens and bathrooms. Laminate flooring is less selective and adapts well to special conditions. Engineering board - a relatively new finishing material. It is similar to the parquet analogue, but consists of two layers: the outer of valuable breeds and the inner of high-quality plywood. Above the floors sheathed by an engineering board, it is possible to carry out a number of manipulations: grind, paint, process. As a result, the surface becomes as close as possible to an array of wood.

Other uses

The material is widely used in decorating the surfaces of furniture and large interior objects. The latter include partitions, false walls, doors, bar counters. Boards sheathe the podiums, which become the conditional center of any room and invariably rivet the attention of everyone. Furniture from this material looks very original. Boards decorate sofas, chairs, armchairs, coffee tables, dressers and shelves. Such furniture organically looks in eco-interiors and rooms decorated in Scandinavian style, provence, country. To shade the naturalness of the decor, the walls are pasted over with photo walls with themed forest landscapes. Special warmth in the kitchen setting will bring a set made of thermowood. From the rough "granary" boards make a high headboard. The original interior object will decorate the Scandinavian style and is perfectly combined with other natural elements: deer horns, animal skins or the decor of these twigs.

The furniture made of small plates is organically looked not only in the interiors of houses. It can be a substitute for garden elements, if the kit is installed on the terrace, backyard or in the gazebo, bath.

Recommendations for registration

The board is added to the interior in strict dosages. In the situation must be respected balance. This is especially important with respect to the old board, which looks a bit gloomy. So that the decoration does not seem to be sated, it is recommended to follow simple rules:

  • Of the boards, it is better to perform only two or three large interior objects or to decorate only one accent wall by them. Do not sheathe this area around the perimeter.
  • If the boards are used in furnishing, then brickwork will be the best background for them. In the loft setting coarse elements will look especially colorful.
  • Combine wood with modern materials and expensive textiles. Then the interior will be stylish, not outdated.
  • Pay attention to the width, thickness of the board, its texture and color. These characteristics should be consistent with the general stylistic concept.

Fortunately, the boards can be processed and, if necessary, dismantled or repainted. Having made a mistake in the design, it can always be corrected.

In which room and how to arrange

In large living rooms it is recommended to sheathe the entire walls of the old boards. Against such a background, modern furniture with expensive textiles will look original. The contrast between cracks and scuffs of already used wood and elegant, rich surfaces will add a special flavor to the setting. In the kitchen, facades, stools, chairs, and sometimes countertops are made of planks. In the combined versions, the material decorates the partitions. In the interior of the cabinet it is recommended to sheathe a “library corner” - a place for internal concentration, where you can tune in to the working mood. In the bedroom material decorates part of the wall, ceiling, headboard, bedside tables or dressing table. To emphasize these elements, it is advised to add decorative lighting in the form of light bulbs around the perimeter of the room or carefully camouflaged appliances located in close proximity to the accent details.

Artificial aging

To artificially aged boards, you will need a hard brush, varnish, brushes, paint and a pair of sponges. This method is the easiest and least expensive. First, the surface is treated with a coarse brush with metal bristles. With its help, you can work out the relief and highlight specific areas. Then put a layer of varnish. After it dries, the boards are painted. A couple of minutes after applying the paint in some places, it is removed with a sponge to get the effect of a slightly worn-out tree. The brush can be replaced with a plane or abrasive powders. The main thing is that the tool "got" to the textured layer of wood with a bright pattern.

Conclusion

Recently, there has been a tendency to use unpretentious, roughly processed materials, even in elite styles. A person cut off from nature, more and more often he wants to create some kind of a corner of it at home. Wooden boards help to cope with this task. In the styling, unexpected combinations of aged surfaces with real stumps, branches, decorative paths from saw cuts and lush thickets of wild flora are used. The textured walls of the boards seem to transfer the luxurious atmosphere of a city apartment to a country house or to a country house. Natural elements enliven the interior and at the same time make it more comfortable and original.
